Communicate Your Brand or FAIL

I do not know of a business or a person who has successfully communicated their Brand, and failed to succeed in business or life.  The key to communicating one's brand is to know your Brand.  Many businesses are too busy making or selling products, providing services and trying to get into the marketplace - that they fail to understand, develop, maintain and communicate their Brand.  We can think of failed industries that lost sight of how to communicate of their Brand.  The automotive industry did this from the 1980 to 2010.  I can point to current companies that were dominant leaders in revenue that are starting to lose Brand Identity some say this is happening to Microsoft.  I can point to retailers large and small that are at risk of shutting their doors because they did not know, maintain and communicate their Brand - Sears and JC Penney to name a few.  In fact, JC Penney is currently the best example of a strong company that lost its way, hired the wrong leadership, created the wrong marketing plans, picked the wrong endorsers and may not survive because they failed to remember, instill and communicate their Brand.

Brand is the umbrella of your business.  It should be the engine that drives the entire company, from marketing to sales, from management to training, and from products to innovation.  Brand is what helps a company to evolve with the changing times and markets.  Brand is what helps you pick the right employees and establish protocols for dealing with disgruntled customers.  When things are going well and the sales are piling up, it is Brand that makes certain the company is prepared for changing needs and leads to research and development.  When the rain and tough times come, it is Brand that keeps the doors open and manages the expectations of the employees and the customers.  It is the UMBRELLA that shades the company in the profitable days while the company is growing and keeps away the bad weather when the sales cycle starts to drift downward and competition enters the marketplace.  Brand is what makes certain a company is here today and 100 years from now.  Brand is the seed of a business that keeps reproducing it over and over again.

Brand should be highlighted by no more than 5 or 6 words.  Brand is communicated the second someone pulls up to your office, your company, your store or sees one of your employees at work or in the field.  Brand starts at the top and is visually known at every level of the business. Brand is what creates the freedom to be creative but keeps creativity focused on what is important.  Brand is what makes the budget work, and is the mother of all marketing.

Do you know your Brand?  Do your employees know your Brand?  Can I pick out your sales force from a sales force of 20 different companies?  Does Brand give you control of the environment around you - or are you a reactionary leader and find that you are putting out fires all day long?  Does Brand build your personal service firm, law firm or medical practice, or do you rely on clever slogans and expensive advertising programs that may or may not work?  Could I describe the core values of your life, your business or your legacy based from what I saw when I met you, walked into your place of business or looked over your marketing programs?  If not: then look out. You may be bathing in champagne today, but the vinegar is coming.  By the time you notice the difference, it may be too late.  Brand is everything!!!

Margaret Thatcher and BRAND; plus suits and bags!

Margaret Thatcher and Personal and Professional Brand'

What are the words that come to mind when you think about this leader?

  • Strong?

  • Hard-driving?

  • THE Iron Lady?

Here is what Colin Powell had to say.  Another leader who happens to have a strong Personal and Professional Brand.'

Thatcher, "exuded influence and power," Powell said. "The hair style, the dress, her manner, the way in which she carried that handbag -- when she walked into a room, you knew that somebody had arrived and you'd better be careful."

Imagine, she did all that without saying ONE word.  Do you know what your Personal and Professional Brand' says when you walk into a room? Is it consistent? Is your image, fashion and presence telling your story?  Margaret Thatcher was a world leader that used her Brand to sway the opinions of people.  She represented the same BRAND when she was not in favor and when she was in favor.  WHO she was did not change with popular opinion, and her Brand became a staple upon which everyone could begin to manage their expectations concerning her position on global, national and regional issues. Your Personal and Professional Brand' should be negotiating and speaking for you within your sphere of influence and in your life in general.  I have been preaching for years that "Brand" is not about the latest fashions or style.  It is not about colors alone, shapes, trends or even fit.  Your Personal and Professional Brand' is a statement, it is consistent and it reflects all that makes you who you are.  Just because something fits' you or even looks good' on you, doesn't mean it is speaking your message and defining the words that send a message to the world about who you are.  Your Personal and Professional Brand' is your statement for your character and purpose.

If you want to buy a bunch of clothes and call that a Brand or WHO YOU are, then please revisit the value of your life.  Clothes do not make the person, the person makes the clothes.  Your Brand, Your Personal and Professional Brand' is an all the time statement.  It does not matter if it is at home, in the community or at work.  It is created, managed and maintained - it is not bought at a store!

If you want to do more than just shop, if you want help in finding, creating and building "Your Brand," please call me.  I am excited about the opportunity to serve you.  You may not be the next Margaret Thatcher, but you still have a world to influence that is looking for a leader that can be seen.

I would love to serve you.  Please call us today for a complimentary consultation.  I would love to see you at our 7th Ladies Night Out event - please read more about this event below.  If you have any questions, please email us!

Warmest Regards,

President, MODA Image Consulting

If you work in a professional environment and wear suits - the best advice I can give you is this: Don't go with BORING.  Look for items with special cuts, designs, buttons and shapes - anything to add a bit of flair.  Feeling feminine in a suit is not always easy.   Rounded and scalloped edges, the right cut, accents on sleeves and well placed pockets are so important.  Your body shape should be appropriately highlighted, not hidden.

Business casual has the same idea.  Each piece should be special.  Mix and match your suit jackets with your other slacks and skirts.  Jackets always add a professional edge.  Casual should not be the word that dictates your fashion decisions in a business casual environment.  It is always important to be professional even in an environment where a matching suit isn't required.  Bags that can stand up' give you a sense of authority and polish verses one that falls open and says sloppy.  If you know your Personal and Professional Brand,' your image should communicate that message. Sometimes it can be the littlest updates that create the largest impact to how others see you.  Something as small as carrying a nicer pen to a meeting verses a Bic pen can make all the difference.  Remember, someone is always watching and most are judging.  Be the best that you were created to be each and every day…

Help the viewing world to see who you are on the inside by expressing your Brand properly on the outside.  Don't let opportunities pass you by because others assume you aren't interested or qualified.
