Leadership, Truth, Brand - Begins in the Home
clear

Women, Leadership, Brand, Truth

There is a famous question in The Book that leads and directs my life.  A question asked by a man named Pontius Pilot.  His question; 'What is truth?"  Remarkably, that question from 2000 years ago is still being asked today, and like 2000 years ago, we have leaders today still trying to define Truth.  They tell us what it means and then lead us based on their own perceptions of truth.  In today's business, truth is elusive because we have taken the concepts of right and wrong, correct and false, good and bad and replaced it with Political Correctness.  Today we are saying to have an "A" in life is elitism, to have a "C" is good and acceptable, and to have an "F" means you are not accountable and someone else is to blame for what has gone wrong.  Can you be a leader and have a life that has a short term purpose? Can a leader lead when there are no consequences for the results of that leadership?  Can there be a real leader that can lead and not understand Truth?

The new buzz of the moment is "This is the Century of the Woman," or "Women in Leadership," or "Women deserve to be in Charge."  I am all about equal pay for equal work, and of course I support equal opportunity when the qualities for leadership are the same, but I am not about false promotion because of gender or the creation of a new 'Good Old Boys Club' we can call the 'Good Old Gals Club.'  Women do lead, women are CEO's and success is not determined by a company position in life but rather by the purpose for which we are living.  For some women, their greatest purpose is their family, and I believe those women are the most important leaders of all. The crucible for all Leadership begins in the home. We develop and mentor our leaders of tomorrow by giving them a living visual example of what leadership looks like while their minds are still forming in their younger years!  We can teach our leaders of tomorrow that the answer to being a leader is not to conform to the world, but rather to be transformed into what can lead the world.  Mothers and fathers can start the process now, they can tell their daughters and their sons that fitting in is not the only answer.  Parents can create a training ground for leaders by giving our children challenges and showing them that failure is a reality.  Not everyone gets a ribbon, only those who persist, who have discipline, who can endure and who have character traits that equate to good leaders can ultimately become tomorrow's true leaders.  Parents can be examples of important traits that include service, humility, community, purposeful compromise and a desire for knowledge by turning off the gadgets, TV and text and in their place engaging their children in conversations of value and promoting the characteristic of accountability.

The last 50 years in America has been a time of change for women in corporate America. The traditional roles of women have changed.  There are more single parent households, more women in the work force out of economic necessity and now more women are leading top American companies.  Yes, there are 21 female CEO's in the ranks of the Fortune 500, and I can assure you they are there because of hard work, a CAN DO ATTITUDE and a clear understanding of who they are.  Should there be more women in leadership roles?  Well of course but because they are qualified, no other reason.  I know that 21 is more than was there 10 years ago, and I am confident that more and more women will lead our companies in the future.  Not because of their gender, but because they are capable leaders and they bring added value to the businesses they lead.

Female leaders today are criticized for being in business and then they are chastised for not being at home.  In the end, todays and tomorrow's leaders, female or male need to KNOW TRUTH.  They need to develop the character for leadership and most of all, they better know their BRAND.  When you know who you are, why you are here and what you want to accomplish, then you can speak out boldly, you can accept criticism as a means to get better and you can fight for what is RIGHT- not just what will be accepted.

Yes women can "Lean In," yes women can help other women learn to lead, and yes women can be capable and strong company leaders.  Do I agree with everything in Sheryl Sandberg's book? No.  A mentor once told me that if there are 8 people sitting around a conference table and only two are discussing what to do - then nobody should expect a great result.  So, no, I don't agree with it entirely, but it's a good and worthy read.  I have heard opinions about this book left and right and even blogs and reviews written about it - with a disclaimer attached saying that the reviewer has not read the book.  Step 1: Read before you review.

The free enterprise system is looking for great leaders that create shareholder value for the public companies they lead.  If you want to lead, sit on a board position or run a company - focus on excelling at your work, excelling in your personal life, and discover and properly communicate your BRAND.  This is true for women and for men.  Whether you are at home, or at work, your role and purpose in life has value.
Thank you for all the women who are sharing their experiences in life and at work by writing inspirational books.  We can all benefit by being well read and learn from the mistakes and success of others.  In the end, you are unique, there is no one else like you in the entire world, and knowing Truth leads to Worthy Character.  The people who possess these traits have solid Brands, and those Brands will shine whether you are leading a company of 10,000 or a family of 3.

March - Resurrection Month

Resurrection Month

Reviving your Business, your Brand and your Body

I always love this time of year.  The world seems to awaken with a desire to improve on its life in every way.  We know the terms, spring cleaning, financial quarterly reviews, and preparation for the summer body.  All of these come to life in the month of March, and it also happens to include my favorite holiday - Easter.  What are you resurrecting this March?  What was once old has the chance to be made new.

Please allow me to share some ideas that I know will be of personal and professional benefit to you.  Let's start with the obvious, BRAND YOU. This is the time of year to take the written plans for better health and turn them into action.  Old man winter is holding on but the sun is coming and we can get outdoors and be more active.  Just thirty minutes of activity outdoors instead of in front of the television can bring added years to your life.  A healthier you is a happier you, and happiness spreads like a smile and a good joke - it makes those around you feel better too.  One of my favorite magazines and websites for healthy workout ideas is Self Magazine. (www.Self.com).  Click HERE is a great link to a 13 minute workout from Self.com!

It is also time to take a look at your Personal Brand and ask yourself; What is your Brand?  Does it need adjusting?  Are you stuck living in the first of the century, or even worse, the 90's?  Now is the time to open the closet doors, and give away the old and bring in the new. What you give away can be made NEW for those who are in need, and what you bring in can take what is old, your outdated Personal Brand and make it fresh and inviting.  (For more information on where to donate clothing, please contact us!)  We are not talking about spending money at the mall, but rather encouraging you to invest in yourself, examine your life and READ the signals you are sending to the world around you.  If you are not growing, changing and improving - then you are stuck.  The stream of life never sits still and you can't just float through it.  Now is the time to work on your "Personal and Professional Brand."  If you missed our guest column with Styleblueprint, Do Your Clothes Reflect Your Personal Brand?, click here to read it.  It's a great correlation between fashion and Personal Brand.

Now for all of you who are business owners and executives, March is the end of the cold and the beginning of spring fever and creative thought.  When God created this planet, he used the spring as the time for new life and the promises of a bountiful year. Your business will reap in due season from the seeds of success that you plant today.  What see are you planting? Are you looking for a harvest without putting the work into growing the plants?  Is your focus on today and not the future?  How about those who work for you, under you or with you?  Do they see a new step in your BRAND?  Attitudes are either a virus that slow you down, or they are a ray of sunlight that can illuminate dark places and stimulate growth everywhere that it is felt.

Is the visual message you are sending adding to the business or taking away from it?  Is the Company Brand still exciting and communicated well, or has it been set on the shelf and lost behind the jars of complacency and technology?  No matter how good the business was, or how great the product has become; a stale Brand is the first bland taste of failure. You never really notice things have changed until it is too late.  Keep your Brand exciting and up front. Communicate your value, along with the value of your peers, product and services with the world and success will find you more often than you find it.  (If you missed our blog, Looking for Leadership, you can read it here!)

This is a season for Resurrection. This is the time to wash away the old you and bring forth a new you. That is true for business and for your personal life.  March is the season of hope for 2013.

Are you ready for a fresh start?

MODA Image Consulting is here to help resurrect you from the darkness and bring you into the light.  Enjoy the following fashion and branding ideas and let me know if I can serve you, your business or someone who is special to you.  I love this month, I love the resurrection and I love that we all can receive its blessings.

Basic Foundation For Success Begins with HOW?
clear

Hi Friends,

Angela Ahrendts, CEO of Burberry, and a woman who I admire greatly, posted this Harvard Business Review column on her twitter titled, "Discovering Your Authentic Leadership."  Read here, http://hbr.org/2007/02/discovering-your-authentic-leadership/ar/1).  I enjoyed it, but I wanted to dig deeper into leadership and what truly makes a great leader.  There were quite a few people who simply retweeted.  My question for all of you is this: Should we always take what others write as truth, or should we test it and see what happens?

Angela, I hope you like my thoughts below - but if you don't, I'd love to hear from you either way!

Warmest,

Mila

Leadership: Does it just happen? We see articles, storylines and books all about leadership and how to create a leader. We are creating leaders based on what Absolute Truths?  How do we define a good leader from a bad one?  Is it based on profits, corporate growth or a commanding personality?  Have we come to a place where we think Leadership is all about the NOW?  We must understand that the basis for all leadership is the TRUTH one lives by that determines who we are and why we are here.  In reality, life doesn't just happen and neither does leadership. Without a real purpose and ultimate goal, our leaders will not be leaders, but only cheerleaders. Understanding HOW we got here is most important to the development of Leaders that will make a lasting difference in the world.

It all begins with a very simple understanding of…How did we get here and how did we get to where we are in life? The goal of life and or business is to reach the highest level of Personal and or Professional Achievement as possible.  To reach one's utmost potential by turning opportunity and preparation into success.  How you believe we reach that goal all begins with the question; "How?"

If you believe that life just happens, that we all started out some millions upon millions of years ago as primal ooze and germs and that time plus chance equals the creation of life - then life really has no purpose other than one's own comforts and self-absorbed love.  Your failure or ability to rise to the top of the ladder, or in our case, the top of the food chain was not because of effort.  Your happiness or disappointments are the results of blind faith, destiny, chance and luck.  You were born at the right time, into the right family in the right neighborhood under the right conditions with no plan whatsoever. Somehow, everything just happened.

The same would be true of your image, it just happens as a result of some special selection by the stars. Or your career, it too just happened because you had more luck in making the right connections.  If you believe as I believe, then you understand that you did not crawl out of the mud of chance but rather you were created. Your placement on this earth was planned, it was not a coincidence.  If your foundation for life is that Life has a Purpose and the reason you are here is for something greater than yourself, you understand that work and dedication play a role in reaching one's utmost good.  For me, this is to relate to God, serve others, and turn all of your efforts into a statement that says something about your existence.

CEO's and great athletes, or amazing mothers and fathers don't JUST HAPPEN.  Legacies are not the result of a spin of the wheel or a roll of the dice.  They are created by executing a plan and investing in the well-being of others.  Leaders are developed, talents are improved and your image becomes a reflection of a person with a vision for tomorrow.  A VISION that can be shaped by the events of today, mixed in with the application of positive actions.  The same is true for one's brand in life.  I call this one's "Personal and Professional Brand."  If Life just happens, then you tend to give in to situations and you stop trying to shape them. Your Image reflects that because you either want to be just like everyone else, or you say Image is not important.  People who understand the foundation of why they are here, have a Basic Foundation for true leadership and a worthy self-image.  They grasp that one reaps what one sows, and your image is the water that attracts the nutrients necessary for growth.

Companies that die are companies that fail to understand their purpose and their brand.  Business does not just happen and lasting success is not a matter of making a great product or having a great idea for the moment.  Companies that grasp they are creating a legacy that goes beyond the product and service they provide are the companies of innovation with a Brand that lasts. The people that work for them understand that the life of a company is found in a belief its brand.

These companies that succeed for the long-term understand the necessity for each employee to properly communicate their BRAND to the rest of the world. The employees of companies that have a clear and communicated Brand that extends beyond the products and profits they make are employees that go the extra mile.  They provide and make a quality product, but they also feel good about their efforts and better about themselves. They understand that THEY as human beings did not just happen, but rather they were created for a higher calling than just living.

Upon this basic foundation one can create leaders in homes, families, schools and business.  What do you believe? What is the basis of your life and the foundation of the image and life you want to build?  Take time to invest in yourself, create a PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BRAND that says, "Yes I AM PART OF THIS WORLD, and I AM SPECIAL, CREATED FOR A GREATER PURPOSE THAN MYSELF."

If MODA Image Consulting can help you define, distribute and deliver your Brand or your business's Brand, please contact us.  Success is waiting for those who grasp that Life can be ETERNAL and they can create a lasting legacy.

The Men and Colors of MARCH MADNESS!
clear

Let's be honest, there are a few times every year that men can wear anything they want, as long as it relates to a favorite sports team. Perhaps the greatest FREEDOM FROM A DRESS CODE is during the infamous month called "MARCH MADNESS."  This is the month where Tiger orange, Carolina blue, Michigan State green and every known color in our spectrum can have a place in the professional dress code.  I am always excited when I see the bright Gamecock Garnett where our oldest daughter attends, Tennessee orange or UCLA baby blue shining proud and loud in a men's tie.

While I would normally chastise you saying, "Hey, wait a moment, your dress code is not a time to highlight your favorite school," this rule is completely off limits during the "March Madness" college basketball month.  Sadly, there are always colleges that do not make the brackets and all of their alumni know they should have so, for these men and fans you can always enjoy a traditional black suit as you mourn the cheers and coffee room conversations about whose team is winning and the next Cinderella team of the decade.

The best part about "March Madness" is that so many colors are represented and education is not as important as the team on the court and the way young collegiate stars perform in their multi colored shirts and the trendy long shorts.  Ivy League schools, ACC Schools, SEC schools, Big Ten Schools, West Coast schools and schools with 50,000 students or 5,000 students are all a part of the party.

So this month, be certain and wear your colors, and if your school doesn't have a team, then I suggest you like the team that your boss likes!!!  There are all kinds of places you can let your colors shine.  Bright socks, shiny ties, cuff links, obnoxious shirts, and for the true fan, you can even get team logo boxers.  So may I say to the MEN OF MARCH MADNESS, this is your month to let your colors show, and as soon as your team is knocked out of the tournament, you must return to the professional dress that your job demands.  As for me and my family, we will be shining bright with Carolina blue, Vanderbilt gold and my personal favorite - San Diego State's scarlet red, gold and black!  I hope you enjoy the games and colors as much as I do and celebrate being "real men," for this is the one month out of the year where your personal brand is allowed to "talk some smack."  Enjoy the games!
