As we close the year, it is always a great time to receive an honest evaluation of your own professional and personal brand. Reviews must be done to ensure success.

2016 can be a banner year for you personally and professionally.

  • Would you like a promotion?
  • Would you like to meet someone special?
  • Would you like to find a career that inspires you to wake up every day?
  • Would you like to build your business?
  • Are there goals that have been on the backburner that you would like to revisit?

If you have not done a personal brand evaluation this year, it is past time review your brand and be aware of what you need to improve on in order to begin reaching those goals. During corporate seminars, one of the most repeated questions I hear from people is how to begin. The first thing you must do in order to know how people perceive you is to ask. You already have a brand and you don't own it other people do.

Before you begin this process, you must be willing to get an F in order to get an A and that may include hearing things that are uncomfortable. This can be a tough assignment for some, but a necessary one for everyone. I can't tell you the number of times people think they are seen one way, and after a questionnaire to their friends and colleagues; I have to tell them that their perception is not reality. I worked with a client who thought she was likable and effervescent at work. The entire office viewed her as a downer.' Those closest to you should already be holding you accountable spouses, parents and even grown children can and should answer that question for you.

Ask them:

  • How do people perceive me?
  • How do people describe me?
  • What do other people say about me?
  • Listen to how you are introduced. What details do people bring up during an introduction?

Compare their answers to how you view yourself. You might be right on, but you may be far off from the reality of how people see you. If that is the case, it is time to begin the rebuilding process. If you have had a failure, commit to rebuilding the brand and have a plan - (another blog to come on rebuilding brand in January). It is never too late to rebuild your brand even after a mistake or an epic failure. A personal brand should be authentic to who you are, and you should be able to share your brand story in a way that draws people in versus pushing them away.

How does one renew their brand? New habits, new ways of thinking, new brand filter (Know your brand attributes and make each decision through them), consistent actions, updated fashion, cultural growth, a networking plan and so much more.
