MODA | TWO THINGS THAT KILL BRAND QUICKLY
I have seen this time and time again while coaching clients. It grieves me, frustrates me and makes me sad for people. So many people have such incredible potential, but they are uncoachable and have a bad attitude. There are those with bad attitudes that bring down an entire department and then there are those that are completely uncoachable, loud and have zero self-awareness.
Have you said or thought this?
I’m not valued at work. I’m not being promoted either financially or via title. I hate my job. I have issues with people I work with. I’m not certain what my goals are. I give up when times are hard.
If you say any of these things; it’s your fault and you’re failing. Most likely, you have a bad attitude and your personal brand is weak. If we did a brand coaching session with you, we would probably find quick and easy answers to your lack of growth and they would have quite a bit to do with your attitude. I read an article by Stanford Psychologist Carol Dweck – her latest study shows that attitude is a better predictor of success than IQ. After years of coaching, I agree fully. Who wants to be around people who perpetually have bad attitudes?

Your personal brand needs to reflect who you really are and help you to rise to your best self on your worst day. Knowing your personal brand, living out your brand attributes, helps you to remember who you are and why you do what you do – which hopefully, can change you attitude to one that inspires, unites and leads even when times are tough.
You may say, I’m smart and I should be confident. That only lasts until times are not easy. The problem with this is forgetting that we deal with people, and our attitudes either inspire others of suck the energy out of a room. Is every meeting with you negative? Painful? Without joy? Is something always wrong? Are you always complaining? Backbiting? Have a negative look on your face? Worried?
At some point, people are going to stop coaching you and choose to move away from you. You can have all the potential in the world, but your attitude is absolutely crushing your ability to reach your purpose. Most of the time, people with these traits are never told about them – why? Because nobody wants to deal with your attitude, so they avoid saying anything that will set you off, create discomfort, make you pout, complain and so on. I’m the coach that will tell my clients that the emperor has no clothes – fix your attitude.
The same way that HR looks for a positive attitude in potential candidates to fulfill a role, management will also look for a positive attitude in a team member that is ready for a promotion.
So, what do you do? Do you KNOW if you have a bad attitude? Have you asked? Who have you asked? Do you want the truth? Or will you just complain about it? Hire a coach. Find a mentor. Get it together.
This is when you are truly tested. Attitudes tend to tank during challenging times. Those who are successful in life take on challenges and view them as exciting, rather than threatening – those who enjoy the journey will win every time. Those who fail and learn and then succeed are winners. If you are afraid of challenges because you think they may unmask your deficiencies, you are already failing.
The worst brand is one that is unable to be coach – you have become unteachable. We see this all the time. Some of our clients are promoted into a prestigious position and they stop learning. Well, now you’re walking the line with personal brand disintegration. If you’ve read any John Maxwell book, (Which you really should have if you are in the workplace), you will never be a level 5 leader with that mindset.
Since the Super Bowl was yesterday, let’s use athletes as an example. A coach corrects one of his players and the athlete responds as a know-it-all and someone with all the answers – UNCOACHABLE. You may think this athlete is confident, overly confident, even to the point of obnoxious. You know the type – the ones who take over every meeting, laugh too loud and have no idea what the entire staff thinks of them? They think they are liked and leading when they are disliked and even worse, nobody trusts them. This act of self-assuredness is nothing more than a shell, a mere facade.
Why does my heart bleed for this person? THIS IS WHY I DO WHAT I DO.
If you were to gently scratch the surface of this hard outer ‘I know everything’ shell, there is typically a human with a painfully low self-esteem and a poor self-image. Deep down, the "uncoachable" athlete or employee may have been emotionally wounded as a kid. You never know! Most of the time, these people feel so badly about themselves, they need to present themselves as much better than they actually are. So, we have grace and we do our best to teach and lead by example.
If you are uncoachable, you will fail. Regardless of the ‘why’ you are that way, nobody really cares – they just want you to be a part of the team, they want to be able to trust you and they want your attitude to be one of inclusion and not just about you you you all the time.
